KUALA LUMPUR: A 15-year-old girl who suffered head injuries in a freak accident involving a playground swing at Taman Metropolitan, Kepong, near here, on Saturday died an hour later at the Selayang Hospital.

It is believed that the victim’s head was lodged in between steel bars of the platform swing which is meant for the disabled or wheelchair users.

Sentul police chief ACP S. Shanmugamoorthy said the accident was reported to police at about 6.30pm on Saturday and information gathered by investigators revealed that the victim had earlier gone to the playground with her relatives.

He said she was playing on the swing when her head became trapped in the structure.

Shanmugamoorthy said the girl bled from her ears and nose, and that with the help of bystanders she was freed.

He said an ambulance arrived at the scene and rushed the girl to the Selayang Hospital for treatment but the victim was pronounced dead at 7.30pm.

“It is very sad this tragedy has befallen this young teenager. Investigations are ongoing to determine what had happened and police are waiting for the post-mortem report that was conducted at the Selayang Hospital,“ said Shanmugamoorthy who visited the victim’s family today.

MP for Kepong Lim Lip Eng, when asked by theSun if the swing posed a hazard to its users, said that he would wait for the outcome of police investigations.

“It is still premature to say if it is a hazard. We will need to examine the findings of police and fire and rescue department when it is completed,“ he added.
