KAJANG: A day after Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim called for a stop to all discussions on the mentri besar's post, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (pix) said she did not dismiss the possibility of taking up the post.
She said she would do so if recommended for it by Pakatan Rakyat (PR).
Her response came at a press conference at the Kajang Municipal Council building today where she had earlier met the councillors.
However, she stressed that her first priority as the newly elected Kajang state assemblyman was to serve the constituents.
"I will think about it as I think it is good for me not to speculate (further on the issue). I have said a few times that I prefer to be of service to the constituents… I don't think of the position… I came here as an assemblyman of Kajang.
"Whatever has been said about the post, at the moment, the MB (Khalid) is doing okay. I don't want to speculate anymore."
Wan Azizah was replying to a question on whether she would agree if PR recommended her for the MB's post.
On Wednesday, Khalid had said that whoever was commenting on the issue should have a good understanding and knowledge of the state's customs and etiquette in relation to the Selangor royalty.
Asked about talk that the by-election, dubbed the "Kajang Move", was initially orchestrated for the PKR candidate to become the next MB, Wan Azizah said that was when (Opposition leader) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was supposed to be the candidate.
On whether she meant that PKR had changed its initial direction, she said: "Well, there may be a few changes but probably it'll take some time."
On serving the people in Kajang, she said she may rent a house, commute from her home in Segambut or stay with her father-in-law who is living in Kajang, so that she could be accessible to the constituents.
She also did not see a problem balancing her role as PKR president and an assemblyman. "I've been the president since its inception, so I think it's all right. I don't think it should be much of a problem."
On whether she will defend her post as party president in the PKR election in May, she said that if the Registrar of Societies did not allow Anwar to contest, then she would do so.
"I'll have to ask the members first and seek their advice before going ahead. After all, they're the ones who'll be choosing," she said.
She also said there was no need to resort to legal action against the Sarawak government for barring three PKR members from entering the state recently.
