Engine fire on Malindo Air ATR72-600 under probe

KUALA LUMPUR: Investigations are ongoing to find out how one of the twin engines of Malindo Air ATR72-600 caught fire during a flight from Subang to Kuala Terengganu on Wednesday.
Malindo Air chief communications officer, Raja Sa'aadi Raja Amrin, said yesterday they had a meeting with the Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi, representatives of the Ministry of Transport and the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) in relation to investigations on the incident involving ATR72-600.
"Such an incident is not new, and in the event of an engine catching fire the pilots and crew will follow the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) assigned to all airlines around the world during such emergencies," he told Bernama here, today.
The pilot decided to turn back to Subang when the aircraft fire detection system was activated while the aircraft was flying at an altitude of 7,000 feet (2,133m) and managed to land safely at Subang Airport.
Upon landing at Subang Airport,60 passengers were transferred to another flight to Kuala Terengganu while 10 passengers were paid cash in lieu of their flight tickets, he said.
The Terengganu football team was onboard the flight and its midfielder, Faiz Subri, uploaded pictures of the engine on fire on Wednesday morning. – Bernama
