KUALA LUMPUR: A strong earthquake, of 6.2 magnitude, occurred near the northern coast of Chile at 8.01am today, the Malaysian Meteorological Department reported.
The epicentre of the quake was 61km southwest of Iquique in Chile and 17,794km southwest of Pontian in Johor, it said.
The department said the quake did not trigger a tsunami. Several aftershocks have been reported in Chile following an 8.2-magnitude earthquake that struck on April 1, triggering a tsunami alert for Chile, Peru and Ecuador that was called off later. – Bernama
