BERA: The Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry is targeting 180 cattle farms to be established nationwide in the next five years to meet the growing demand for livestock products.
The demand for livestock products have been largely driven by human population and income growth.
Its minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob (pix) said there were 61 farms currently in country.
"The need for more farms is ensure adequate supply of meat during festive seasons," he told reporters after chairing the Bera Umno divisional meeting here today.
Ismail Sabri also said his ministry was also looking at importing live cattle from several new source countries namely Myanmar and Cambodia, with a total of 20,000 cattle from Myanmar beginning May.
He said currently Malaysia was still importing about 100,000 tonnes of fresh meat a year and the government would ensure by 2020, half of the volume was from domestic sources. – Bernama
