GEORGE TOWN: The DAP will not be pressing the federal government to bestow honours on former national party chairman Karpal Singh (pix) who died in a car crash last week.

National vice-chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the Bukit Gelugor MP was never one to seek such awards.

The notion of struggling for a reward was never on the mind of the noted democracy advocate, he said in a press conference today.

Karpal died when the MPV he was travelling in was involved in a crash with a lorry just after midnight near Kampar, Perak.

His death shocked many, with more than 10,000 people turning up for his funeral on Sunday to pay their last respects.

Many were frustrated for not being able to bid their final goodbyes but Chow said the funeral committee had to work within the two hour limit.

The organisers only expected about 3,000 people.

On the coming by-election triggered by the death of Karpal, Chow said the party has yet to think about the matter.

"Let me think first, its too soon," he said, adding that the memorial service for Karpal in Penang scheduled for tomorrow would be postponed to a later date.
