SHAH ALAM: Why spend RM340 million to build a pedestrian tunnel linking KL Sentral MRT station to Muzium Negara when a fully automated overhead bridge would only cost RM50 million?
This is the question Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad is asking Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT).
He said the tunnel will have to navigate around underground beams and columns, and this could be dangerous due to the many skyscrapers in the vicinity.
He added that a fully automated overhead bridge costing only RM50 million should be a good alternative to the tunnel.
"Why do we need to take risks building a RM340 million tunnel, if we have a better option?" asked Khalid.
"I am not an expert in engineering, but I want an answer on why MRT decided on the tunnel."
He said the overhead bridge will also be an added attraction to Kuala Lumpur.
It is believed that the tunnel proposed by MRT is 300 metres long, complete with air conditioning system. The estimated walk time from one end to the other is eight minutes.
