DAP gag on by-election

GEORGE TOWN: DAP has requested party leaders not to talk to the media on the issue of who will be fielded for the Bukit Gelugor by-election.
Party secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said all leaders have been told to refrain from speaking about the by-election.
He said this is to avoid distortion by the mainstream media on the by-election triggered by the death of incumbent Karpal Singh in a car crash last week.
"No announcement will be made on candidate until April 28," he said in a statement today.
Meanwhile, Penang Barisan Nasional chairman Teng Chang Yeow played down speculation that the coalition will sit this contest out.
He said the issue does not arise at this moment, adding that a meeting will be held next Monday but did not elaborate on what will be discussed.
Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said police are ready to handle the coming polls.
He said a 6,011-strong team will be deployed to ensure the by-election proceeds smoothly.
"We are ready," he said at a press conference after attending a High Profile Policing (HPP) programme at the Bayan Baru wet market here.
