PAS threatened with legal action over hudud bill

KUALA LUMPUR: Gerakan Youth will take legal action against PAS if the Islamic party proceeds with its plan to table a Private Member's Bill in Parliament for the implementation of hudud in Kelantan.
Its chief, Tan Keng Liang said the legal action was to defend and protect the Federal Constitution which had never made any provision for the implementation of hudud in the country.
"PAS plans to table the motion perhaps in June or the latest, by September. If this happens, we will form a team of lawyers to study the matter.
"If the motion is passed in Parliament, the legal team will try to get a court order to strike it out," he said after handing over the notice of legal action to national PAS Youth assistant secretary Yusapiza Yaakob, at the party's headquarters in Jalan Raja Laut, here, today.
Tan said the implementation of hudud, the Islamic penal code, would result in two different criminal laws in the country.
"Our existing criminal law and system are improving from time to time. If there's any flaw in the law and the procedures, it would be better to legislate to rectify that flaw.
"It's not practical to make a total revamp of the whole system for that purpose.
"We would like to remind that this issue is not about anyone against Islamic law and principles. It's a question of whether we should forget the principles agreed upon in the Federal Constitution," Tan said.
Yesterday, Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said the state PAS would continue with its agenda to implement hudud.
He also reminded the other partners in the opposition pact that they had no right to interfere in this matter. – Bernama
