KUALA LUMPUR: MCA has asked Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties, including Umno, to vote against a private member's bill on the implementation of hudud, which PAS plans to table in Parliament in June.
Party president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the party has clearly stated that it strongly opposes the private member's bill as it is against the Federal Constitution.
"Umno and other BN component parties have to oppose any bill that violates the constitution of the country.
"We need to uphold our constitution to ensure unity and harmony in the country," he said during a press conference at Wisma MCA today.
Liow said there are a lot of questions about the implementation of hudud that PAS cannot answer and it is raising confusion as it creates another set of criminal laws in the country.
"It is against the Penal Code and it will create disunity and disharmony in the country," he said.
Asked whether MCA will quit BN if the component parties cannot reach a consensus on the matter, Liow insisted DAP and PKR should settle the matter before PAS tables it in Parliament in June, and not throw the issue at MCA.
