(Review) X-Men: Days of Future Past

26 May 2014 / 12:30 H.

MUTANTS and humans who sympathise with them are being hunted and killed off by super, unstoppable robots called Sentinels.
As the demise of the mutants as a species near, Prof Xavier (Patrick Stewart), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), Magneto (Sir Ian McKellen) and Storm (Halle Berry) arrive at the last bastion of mutant resistance to seek the help of Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page) to transport Xavier’s mind into his past self (in the 1970s) and change the course of history.
Since Xavier’s brain would not be able to survive the process, Logan aka Wolverine steps in and returns to the body of his 70s self in order to unite a now broken Xavier (James McAvoy) with Magneto (Michael Fassbender) who is being kept in a high security prison.
The two friends who became enemies now must work together to stop Raven (Lawrence) from killing Dr Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) and set off the chain of events that will lead to the building of the Sentinels.
The movie covers aspects of the X-Men lore but at its core is a role reversal in which Xavier, who used to be Logan’s mentor, is now in need of guidance from his student.
Fans will be thrilled to see many of the characters from the previous and current X-Men franchise.
As for the story, just imagine X-Men: The Last Stand never happened and you will be fine. There are many holes in the plot but the director weaves such an engaging tale that you will feel compelled to forgive.
The acting is done well but McAvoy and Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy aka The Beast are given more scope to shine here compared to X-Men First Class.
The biggest scene stealer is Evan Peters who has a brief role as Peter Maximoff aka Quicksilver, a kleptomaniac who has a pivotal part in the movie.
If you have been following the X-Men movies you will want to watch this one.
