KEPALA BATAS: Police have recovered a partially burnt car which they believe is the getaway vehicle which was involved in the death of a policeman in Perak on Monday.
North Seberang Perai district police chief ACP Abdul Rahman Ibrahim said the Toyota Wish MPV was found burning in an oil palm plantation at Ara Kuda, Bukit Mertajam, about 4.30pm – hours after the fatal incident.
He said police found the burning car following a tip-off and had to get the Fire and Rescue Department personnel to put out the flame.
"The vehicle is about 60% burnt," he said at a press conference today.
He added that police will be checking the vehicle thorougly to find evidence.
Abdul Rahman said police will be arranging to hand over the torched vehicle to their counterparts in Perak for further investigations.
Although the burnt car, which was found several hours after the robbery, was highly likely to be that which the robbers had used, investigators are carrying out tests on the vehicle to verify this.
"Police believe the suspects set fire to the vehicle to avoid leaving any clues," he added.
Meanwhile, in Bagan Serai, Kerian police chief Supt Mat Fauzi Nayan said a massive hunt for the robbers and their accomplice who rammed into 25-year-old Lance Corporal Mohd Azwan Abdullah was ongoing.
Mohd Azwan was buried at his hometown in Johor today.
The policeman, who was attached to the district's motorcycle patrol unit, was due to marry his fiancee on Sunday at her hometown in Kedah when tragedy struck after he responded to the robbery alert.
The policeman and another colleague spotted the robbers' getaway car before giving chase on their motorcycles.
Police said after several kilometres into the chase, Mohd Azwan managed to catch up with the robber's car on Jalan Matang Jelutong but was unaware a Honda Civic, driven by an accomplice of the fleeing men, was trailing him.
The driver of the Honda then rammed into Mohd Azwan, throwing him off his machine, and killing him on the spot.
