PKR identifies elements of sabotage in party polls (Updated)
PETALING JAYA: The PKR party elections committee investigating disruptions to its polling process has identified elements of sabotage.
Committee chairman Datuk Johari Abdul said it has investigated complaints and reports lodged by members since May 17.
He cited instances of saboteurs barging into polling stations to create a ruckus and target ballot boxes. Some of them are gangsters, he claimed.
"We can confirm, based on our evidence, that gangsters were involved in the ruckuses in the Kota Raja and Kuala Langat division elections," he said.
Johari said the committee had viewed video recordings and photographs of the incidents but appealed to those with more evidence to come forward.
"We are calling on party and public members who have recordings and other evidence to come forward and assist us," he said at a press conference at the PKR headquarters here today.
Johari said no police report has yet been lodged as "this is a party matter and the committee is trying to determine whether individuals who caused ruckuses are party members".
"Members found to have breached party ethics or rules will be referred to the party's disciplinary board for further action," he said.
Johari also said that fresh elections will be held in 35 divisions.
The Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Kemaman, Dungun, Jerantut, Paya Besar, Pasir Puteh and Pengerang divisions will hold their re-elections on May 31, whereas the Tenggara and Sungai Petani divisions will have theirs on June 1.
Polling dates for fresh elections for the other divisions will be announced in the near future, he said.
"Some divisions will hold elections for both the parent body and its wings while others will have polls for only the Youth or Wanita wing," he said.
