Khairy: 17th Sukma a success

KANGAR: Despite some teething problems, the 17th Malaysia Games (Sukma), which came to a close last night, was a success, said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin (pix).
He said minor problems like the aquatic centre canvas roof giving way, the leaking roof at the badminton court and food poisoning affecting five athletes did not dampen the Games.
The 17th Sukma went on smoothly without any technical glitches, he told reporters here yesterday.
On complaints that tenpin bowling athletes had to play until the wee hours of the morning, he said all contingents were notified that the bowling centre for the 17th Sukma had only 24 lanes, hence the competition had to be extended.
The first day of the tenpin bowling competition at the Kayangan Mall here on May 27 was delayed for three hours due to power failure while on Monday, the team event had to be extended until the small hour of the morning due to damaged lanes.
On the athlete performance, Khairy said the junior athletes showed promising results in their respective sports.
"Sukma is a platform for national, state and regional junior athletes to display their potentials and gain early exposure before they scale greater heights," he said. – Bernama
