IIUM to solve campus flooding

KUALA LUMPUR: International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is looking for solutions to prevent flash floods in the campus and the cause of the problem and may take legal action against those responsible.
Its president, Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim said from feedbacks gathered, the flash floods in the IIUM campus yesterday was caused by development projects located upstream of a river near the university.
"We want to know preventive measures taken by the developers. If there were none, why not?" he told reporters after opening the third International Language Conference at IIUM, Gombak near here today.
Five cars belonging to lecturers and students were submerged in a metre of water at the IIUM campus during flash floods following heavy downpour yesterday.
Rais said IIUM would take immediate measures to address the problem, including seeking help from the Selangor government as IIUM is located in Selangor.
In his speech, Rais urged the IIUM Bahasa Melayu Division to conduct Bahasa Melayu lessons in Jawi scripts.
"This as a move to revive the Jawi scripts in the teaching of the language.
This initiative to my mind will hasten the realisation of our goal to resurrect the glory of Bahasa Melayu in Jawi and place it in proper perspective.
"Let Bahasa Melayu utilising the Jawi scripts be taught to all students, Malaysians and internationals alike in the quest to promote Bahasa Melayu to the rest of the world," he added.
Speakers from Saudi Arabia and New Zealand as well as presenters from 28 countries are taking part in the three-day conference which started yesterday. – Bernama
