Homeless content to live on streets

SUNGAI BULOH: Homeless people are more comfortable living on the streets because they do not have trouble getting food or clothes, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim.
She said this is mainly because members of the public are generous in providing food and clothes to them.
Speaking to reporters after distributing food to homeless people, she said they are living an easy life because of a kind society.
Rohani said the ministry had found jobs for some of these people but after several months at work, employers complained that they stole items from the workplace.
"Unfortunately, they prefer to steal or beg for money and food, rather than to have a normal life," Rohani said after visiting a temporary protection complex here today.
She said ministry personnel will be going on rounds to pick up these homeless people and place them at the complex before taking action on them for illegal or criminal activities.
There are currently 4 temporary protection complexes in Malaysia, located at Mersing, Jerantut, Kota Kinabalu and Sungai Buloh.
The facilities are to provide protection and rehabilitation to the homeless before they re-integrate into society.
Another similar complex will be built on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur to accommodate them when the one in Sungai Buloh reaches full capacity.
