KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) issued 1,694 summonses and compounds to errant motorists this year for causing traffic congestion under "Operasi Halang", conducted jointly with the police and other government departments and agencies.
DBKL enforcement officer Mohd Hisham Izhar said the operation is aimed at educating people on the need to abide by the law and not obstruct traffic flow.
He said their main focus is on public transport and commercial vehicles who park along roadsides and non-designated parking areas.
"We receive lots of complaints from the public on these errant motorists who park illegally, causing inconvenience to other road users," he said.
In the 13th such operation held today, the authorities issued 81 summonses and compounds, besides towing away two cars.
The two-hour operation led by the DBKL Traffic Unit involved a total of 44 officers from the police, Road Transport Department, Land Public Transport Department, Immigration Department and Department of Environment.
The operation was held at Lebuh Pasar Besar, Jalan Tun H. S. Lee, Jalan Tun Razak, KLCC and Jalan Ampang.
Hisham said DBKL alone had issued 399,367 summonses and compounds for various traffic offences as of May, besides towing 3,209 vehicles for traffic obstruction.
DBKL is also in the midst of installing 1,200 CCTV cameras to nab errant motorists.
