Cop among six held for terror links

KUALA LUMPUR: A policeman was among five men and a woman arrested in Sabah for suspected terrorism and links with the defunct Sulu Sultanate in south Philippines.
Apart from the police corporal, who is believed to be in his late 40s, those held include an illegal immigrant and his 57-year-old Malaysian wife and a 61-year-old man and his son, both Malaysians.
The sixth suspect is a 56-year-old Malaysian man.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the suspects were detained at undisclosed locations in Kunak in a joint operation between the federal police Special Branch and the Eastern Sabah Security Command (EssCom) today.
It is learned that the suspects had allegedly drawn up plans to revive and form an "army" of terrorists, with plans to mount another incursion, such as the one in Lahad Datu last year.
He said police seized from the suspects documents such as membership cards of the Sulu Sultanate, a certificate that showed that one of them was the military general of the defunct royalty and several sharp weapons.
He said the arrests were a follow-up operation to the Lahad Datu incursion by more than 200 Sulu gunmen in February last year, where 10 Malaysian security forces personnel were killed.
Khalid said the suspects are being held under the Special Offences and Special Measures Act (Sosma) for further investigations.
