Thousands affected by unscheduled water supply disruption

KUALA LUMPUR: Thousands of residents in the Klang Valley were caught off guard when their taps suddenly ran dry since late this afternoon.
The non-scheduled water disruption in five districts – Gombak, Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang/Shah Alam and Hulu Langat – was due to reduced water production at treatment plants in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.
Many residents expressed disappointment that it happened despite a recent announcement by the Selangor mentri besar that there will not be any disruption to water supply.
Setapak Jaya community leader Badrun Masan said he is hoping that supply will resume soon as he had not stored any water.
"It happened all of a sudden and there was no notification to say that there will be a disruption," he added.
Badrun said he called Syabas to complain and subsequently, a water tanker arrived at around 2pm to supply some 5,000 liters of water to residents.
"The water disruption started on Wednesday at about 4pm. Until today, there is still no water. I cannot cook for my family and do not have water even for toilet use. I hope Syabas will send its tankers, especially with the fasting month starting this Sunday," said Setapak Jaya resident Fadzilah Karim.
Another resident in Gombak, who identified herself only as Celine, said it is very difficult to be without water, especially with the current heat and haze.
A check by theSun showed Syabas tankers supplying water at some of the affected areas. Many residents came armed with pails and bottles to collect water for their daily needs.
According to Syabas, tankers are being sent to affected areas, including hospitals, dialysis centres, mosques and government clinics.
Consumers can call the Syabas hotline at 1-800-88-5252 to request for water tankers and static tanks in case of an emergencies, especially for weddings and funerals.
