No tsunami threat from Mentawai earthquake

    BANDAR LAMPUNG: The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the 5.0-magnitude earthquake in north west Mentawai Island, West Sumatra did not trigger a tsunami alert, Indonesia's ANTARA news agency reported.
    "The earthquake did not trigger any tsunami threat to the surrounding coastal areas," said Yuharman, head of the agency's geophysics station in Kotabumi on Tuesday.
    Yuharman said the quake struck at 4.58am local time and its epicentre was determined at 2.01 degrees south latitude and 99.14 degrees east longitude, and had a depth of 31 km.
    The location of the earthquake is in southeast of Sumatra, 63 km northwest of Mentawai Island, 184 km southwest of Pesisir Selatan, 189 km southwest of Pariaman, 179 km southwest of Padang, West Sumatra and 970 km northwest of Jakarta. – Bernama
