‘Appropriate’ action if hudud bill passed

PETALING JAYA: Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong says he and his party will take responsibility should PAS table a private member's bill in Parliament to enforce hudud and have it approved with the support of Umno MPs.
The minister in the Prime Minister's Department told Sin Chew Daily in an interview published on Sunday that if it happens (the hudud bill is passed), he will take "appropriate" action.
He said he will not shirk his responsibility as he is a member of the Cabinet.
However, he added: "Don't ask me now for the kind of action I will take".
Stressing that he is not trying to be a hero or wanting to harp on the issue, Mah said he and Gerakan are trying their best to stop PAS from tabling the bill.
He said once it happens, PAS's partners in Pakatan Rakyat too will be held responsible.
He pointed out that DAP can help convince PAS not to table the bill, instead of allowing the controversy to be harped on.
Mah said Gerakan had made it clear right from the beginning that hudud is not suitable for Malaysia. The party still holds firm to that stand, he added.
"I have been trying to get an opportunity to meet PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang to explain the reasons why hudud is not suitable for Malaysia," he said.
He said Gerakan is firmly against any law that is not in line with the Federal Constitution and hopes that all other MPs would vote against the private member's bill on hudud should it be tabled.
On another note, Mah, being fully aware of the Chinese community's high expectations of the three Cabinet ministers from MCA and Gerakan, said he will do his best to get the Chinese community's voices heard in the Cabinet and to fight for its rights and interest.
He admitted that the high expectations of the Chinese community are putting pressure on him because the issues facing the community are rather tough.
As such, he said he will work closely with MCA's Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong to resolve issues plaguing the community.
