Project to brighten Brickfields

KUALA LUMPUR: A community art project designed to arrest urban decay and bring the history and origin of Brickfields to life has been initiated by Global Shapers Kuala Lumpur (GSKL).
Its first project for this year was redesigning the outer walls of SMK La Salle, Brickfields.
The location was chosen due to its diminishing historical value and high traffic.
The mural project, known as "Better Streets", was carried out with the support of the local community, artists and students from SMK La Salle.
Four walls of the school were decorated to depict short stories of Brickfields' heritage, including highlights of the soon-to-be demolished government quarters, which are popularly known as "100 Quarters".
"We want to engage the community and we want to encourage people to help one another," GSKL curator Shawn Keng said, adding that this is one of the many projects to come.
Keng was speaking to reporters after a media presentation on the project today.
A total of 50 people, including 30 students from SMK La Salle, spent the weekend from June 20 to June 22 painting the four walls.
GSKL is a non-profit organisation affiliated with the World Economic Forum.
It aims to bring together diverse and passionate youths to create community-focused impact through innovative, sustainable initiatives and collaborations.
