SEREMBAN: National cyclist Muhammad Fauzan Ahmad Lutfi cheated death when his multi-purpose vehicle crashed into a lorry at Km247 of the North-South Expressway near Senawang here on Monday night.
The lorry driver, Abas Baharom, 44, died in the accident which occurred at 11.30 pm.
Muhammad Fauzan's vehicle rammed into the three-tonne lorry that had suffered a puncture, skidded and overturned in the middle of the expressway.
"It was dark and I was driving on the middle lane and did not see the overturned lorry," said Muhammad Fauzan.
He added one of the legs of the lorry driver was severed in the accident and he had died on the spot.
The severed leg of Abas hit Risda deputy director-general (development) Datuk Mohamad Muda who was in a Proton Inspira car going in the opposite direction, causing his driver to brake suddenly.
Abas' body was sent to the Tuanku Jaafar Hospital.
Muhammad Fauzan and Norasikin were sent to the same hospital for treatment.
Muhammad Fauzan, 28, told reporters at the scene that his wife, Norasikin Omar, 31, was badly injured in the accident.
He said they were returning to Kuala Lumpur after attending a breaking-of-fast event organised by the Malaysian National Cycling Federation in Malacca.
Muhammad Fauzan was scheduled to leave for Glasgow today to compete in the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Negri Sembilan traffic police chief Supt Abdul Aziz Ali, when contacted, confirmed the accident. – Bernama
