KUALA LUMPUR: A group of some 400 university and college students staged a demonstration in front of the Parliament House in a show of support to the victims and family members of the downed Malaysia Airlines flight MH17.
The rally, which commenced at 9am, was held while Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and Members of Parliament were to attend the Dewan Rakyat special sitting on MH17.
Among the participants were students from Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM), Institut Pendidikan Guru (IPG) Ilmu Khas campus and Hulu Langat Community College.
UPNM cultural officer Safinah Dzulkepli, 33, said the demonstration was held to show their support of the government's effort in handling the MH17 incident.
"40 of our students attended the demonstration. We strongly lauded the effective measures made by the government and hope that our PM stays strong until the matter is resolved," she told reporters in front of the Parliament House.
She said some of the MPs were seen waving their hands and honked in support of the rally.
Flight MH17 was en route to Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam, ferrying 298 passengers and crew, when it was believed to have been shot down by the pro-Russian separatist group over eastern Ukraine skies.
"In this trying time, Malaysians have to be united regardless of our background. This is the time for all of us to stand and trust our PM and his team," she said.
UPNM student, Fakhrul Anwar Ruhaizin, 19, said he was satisfied with the way the government is handling the case.
"We managed to get the remains and black boxes. Now what is left for us is to bring those responsible to face justice," he said.
IPG lecturer Mustapha Kamal Ahmad Kassim said the students share the sadness of the family members of those on board MH17.
"We want to contribute by showing our moral support to those affected. This is also a show of us opposing the inhumane shooting of MH17," he said.
"We will continue our support until those affected were served justice," he added.
During the one hour demonstration, students were seen wearing t-shirts and holding banners that read "#justice4mh17". Some were also seen distributing buttons and Malaysia flags to passers-by.
