BUTTERWORTH: The Penang Customs Department scored its biggest firecracker and fireworks bust this year with the seizure of more than half a million ringgit of the banned items.
State Customs director Datuk Zulkifli Yahya said a raiding team found 240 boxes of the contraband on July 19 in two lorries abandoned by the roadside near Jalan Kedah, off Kampung Jambatan Merdeka in Kepala Batas near here.
He said one lorry had 6,120kg worth of the items while another contained 4,469kg. Zulkifli said Customs investigators believe the fireworks and firecrackers were headed for the Penang market.
"The operations team seized the items following a tip-off but there was no one at the scene," he told a press conference today.
He also urged the public to inform the department of any suspicious activities involving contraband items.
