RM109,000 worth of water siphoned off

SHAH ALAM: The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) and Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) today raided a construction site in Jalan Kebun near here for illegal siphoning of water that has resulted in losses amounting to RM109,000.
Investigations revealed that a 15mm high density polyethylene (HDPE) extension pipe had been connected directly to Syabas' main pipe and it is suspected that the construction site for 15 units of five-storey shops used a 25mm poly pipe and water pump to supply water to the site for its daily use.
Syabas Corporate Communication and Public Affairs general manager Priscilla Alfred said there is no evidence of any bill being issued for the construction site and a chlorine test done by Syabas proved that the water is Syabas' treated water.
"The water theft activity has been going on since April last year and we have issued notices and taken action on the developer to claim compensation for using treated water illegally and SPAN will take legal action under Section 123 (1) of the Water Services Industry Act 2006 (Act 655)," she added.
From Jan 1 to July 18, 1,944 water theft cases were recorded with 182 cases classified as genuine.
Priscilla said water theft cases have cost Syabas a total of RM5.7 million in losses.
