MH17 motion passed at special sitting

KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat today unanimously passed the emergency motion on the tragic incident involving MH17.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin wrapped up the sitting after restating some of the facts about the tragedy while providing an update to it.
Muhyiddin also took questions from Lim Guan Eng (DAP-Bagan), Gooi Hsiao Leung (PKR-Alor Star) and Sim Tze Tzin (PKR-Bayan Baru) about the negotiation between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and pro-Russian separatist leader Alexander Borodai.
"Nothing was offered to secure the return of the black boxes and remains of passengers of Flight MH17. The prime minister instead used wisdom to convince the rebel leader of the importance to Malaysia and the international community that this issue was resolved," Muhyiddin said.
"Nothing further than the three points the PM mentioned was offered.
"There will be no special treatment for the separatists if it is indeed proven that they shot down MH17. Forgiveness will not be offered to anyone if they are proven to be guilty. This will not become a restriction for us to take action," he added.
Earlier, Muhyiddin said the 282 bodies that were recovered have been handed to the Dutch investigation team.
"If any of these bodies are identified to be Malaysians, we request the Dutch to expedite the return of the remains to Malaysia," he said.
"Both the black boxes were handed to Malaysian representatives in Donestk on July 21, and later handed to the international investigation team in Kiev. The black boxes were flown to London on the same day, and now are in Farnborough, UK with the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) UK to be analysed," he said.
Muhyiddin also reiterated Najib's statement earlier confirming the safety of the air route that MH17 was on as some of the MPs had brought it up in the debate.
"The route was determined to be safe by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and International Air Transport Association (IATA). Pilots are only allowed to change their route with reason," he said.
Muhyiddin said the government will be forming a special investigation team consisting of the police, Department of Civil Aviation and other relevant bodies. Investigation is to start immediately.
He said Malaysia will make every effort to ensure those responsible face justice.
"We realise that the Malaysian authorities do not have the jurisdiction to conduct an investigation or arrest criminals in other countries. Thus, the investigation can only be conducted if there is cooperation and real commitment from the countries and organisations that are involved," he said.
