Burglars bring down the roof using bomb on ATM

RAWANG: Two men fled empty handed after they failed to blast open an automated teller machine (ATM) with a homemade bomb, but caused massive damage to the Public Bank branch in Bukit Beruntung near here early today.
The explosion brought down the ceiling, shattered glass doors and dented the steel housings of eight ATMs.
The damage to the building could have been worse had a second homemade bomb, that police found at the scene, had gone off.
Witnesses told police they spotted a motorcyclist and his pillion rider, both wearing full-face helmets, walking into the ATM room prior to the explosion at about 5am. After they stepped out, there was a tremor in the area when the explosion occurred.
Selangor police deputy CID chief ACP Roslan Radzi said yesterday the cash in the ATMs were intact while a cheque deposit machine was badly damaged.
Roslan said police personnel who arrived the scene on being alerted by the public found a live bomb discarded outside the ATM room, which was later defused by the police bomb disposal unit.
"There was only structural damage to the building. We are examining a closed-circuit security camera recording," he said.
Police also recovered a mobile phone which they believe belonged to one of the men, and hope to get some leads from it.
The low-impact explosive is believed to be made from fireworks material.
