139 fatalities recorded under Op Selamat 5 so far

    KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 127 fatal accidents that killed 139 people were recorded nationwide in the eight days since Op Selamat 5/2014 was launched.
    Bukit Aman federal traffic police chief SAC Mohd Fuad Abd Latiff said a total of 10,349 accidents were recorded during that period.
    "A total of 117,957 summons were issued to traffic offenders while 1,598 summons were issued to offenders using the emergency lanes," he told reporters here today.
    Meanwhile he said 24,440 patrols were conducted to watch over houses that were left unoccupied during the Hari Raya celebration.
    He said police had received 19,421 information from the public intending to their leave their homes unattended during the current festivity.
    Mohd Fuad said the 15-day Op Selamat, that ends on August 4, was implemented in conjunction with Aidilfitri to reduce road accident rates, especially fatal accidents, launch traffic flow and prevent crimes. – Bernama
