PETALING JAYA: Singer (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd yesterday handed over RM57,500 to theSun-Mercy Malaysia Bosnia Flood Disaster Relief Fund.
The money comprised its contribution of RM52,500 from the proceeds of its four weekend special sales in aid of theSun-Mercy Malaysia Bosnia Flood Disaster Relief Fund.
The other RM5,000 was payment for a vintage advertisement the company bought from a reader of theSun, who had elected to donate the money for Bosnia.
"We are happy with the response to our campaign in aid of the Bosnian flood victims," said Singer managing director Yeap Dein Wah who presented a mock cheque to theSun's managing editor Freddie Ng.
Ng meanwhile thanked the hundreds of people who had patronised the charity weekend sales in aid of the fund, and Singer which had earlier pledged to donate 30%, 50% and 100% of the proceeds from various listed items offered, and 15% from all other products sold during the four weekends.
Singer which has been holding weekend sales at its head office in Petaling Jaya since 2011, had pledged to contribute a percentage of the proceeds from its sales for four weekends to the Bosnia Flood Disaster Relief Fund, by offering many items at special prices.
"Although things were rather slow the first weekend, things picked up from the second weekend onwards and on the whole, the response to the charity campaign was great," said Singer's marketing communciations manager Irene Ooi.
"I came in a few times during the weekends and saw customers coming in droves although I was in for only an hour or two.
"Often we had more than 20 customers in an hour, as many had read about campaign for Bosnia and many wanted to contribute to the cause as well as take advantage of the incredibly low prices offered," she said.
"Among the best selling items were our insect killer and air steriliser, which we had offered very cheaply to help the public fight mosquitoes and the hot hazy weather," she said.
"People were concerned about the dengue outbreak and haze, and these items are useful as they are small and portable, making them great gifts to distribute among family and friends," she said, adding that various other household items offered were also quickly snapped up and contributed to the success of Singer's campaign in aid of Bosnia.
With Singer's contribution, theSun-Mercy Malaysia Bosnia Flood Disaster Relief Fund now stands at RM925,000.
A total of RM1.1 million (BAM500,000) in the form of much needed medical equipment has been pledged to two Bosnian hospitals in the towns of Doboj and Maglaj which were the worst affected areas when the heaviest rains and floods in 120 years hit Bosnia and the surrounding region in May.
