Marina: Be concerned about oppression regardless of religion and country

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians must be concerned about violence and oppression in the world regardless of religion, race or country, said social activist Datin Paduka Marina Tun Mahathir.
She said the people must be concerned about the oppression taking place in Palestine, Syria, Sri Lanka and elsewhere based on fundamental rights and humanity and not based on religion or race.
"I have always supported those who are oppressed regardless of race and based on human rights. Most world communities, regardless whether they are Muslims, Christians or Jews are supporting Palestine.
"But in Malaysia, we like to say this is only for the Muslims, or that for the non-Muslims...This is actually wrong and should not happen," Marina told reporters after launching the campaign, 7 billion acts of goodness, Malaysian chapter, here yesterday.
She said although what was happening in Gaza now was most sad, the oppression occurring in other countries should not be forgotten because humans are the creation of God and are equally important.
When asked to comment on the burning of the Israeli flag at a wedding reception in Melaka Saturday, she said the incident should not have transpired at a wedding ceremony.
"Wedding is a good occasion...should not be associated with violence and so on, we should separate such things. They should be praying for the safety of everyone faced with the problem," she said. Marina also urged users of social media to understand a particular issue thoroughly before giving comments and views that might offend other people. – Bernama
