KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) solved 82% of the 967 cases they investigated last year as compared to 75% in 2012.
MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed said the investigations led to the arrest of 509 people which involved 33.8% of them for accepting bribes, giving bribes (33.6%), false claims (15.5%) and abuse of power (12.6%).
"Our achievement last year is on par with the standards set by the commission in combating corruption in Malaysia," he told reporters after presenting the commission's Annual Report at Dewan Negara president Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang.
He said their success in solving the cases proved that MACC is an effective agency in combating corruption.
To be even more effective and efficient, Abu Kassim said: "Other than bringing changes to MACC's structure and operations, we also intend to propose amendments to the MACC Act 2009."
He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak was agreeable to the proposed amendment and hoped to get the support of the Parliamentarians on it.
Abu Kassim said their performance is being closely monitored by international bodies, including the United Nations Office on drugs and crime.
