Lim: Khalid selfish to cling on to MB post

GEORGE TOWN: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng (pix) has described the reluctance of Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim to relinquish his position as being extremely selfish.
He said Abdul Khalid must step down because the mentri besar had lost the support of the majority of the Selangor State Assemblymen.
"Especially you look at the principle of democracy and the constitution, when you have lost the majority support, I think you have to go...Tan Sri Abdul Khalid has to go, as simple as that.
"And merely because he wants to hang on to the post of mentri besar, I think that is extremely selfish. It is not in the interest of democracy," he told reporters at the Merdeka Raya Open House gathering, here today.
Lim, who is also Penang Chief Minister, said that as an ally of the PKR in the Opposition Pact, DAP respected the decision of PKR to appoint a new mentri besar and supported Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to replace Abdul Khalid.
Commenting on the statement by Abdul Khalid who did not discount the possibility of dissolving the State Legislative Assembly to resolve the state leadership crisis, Lim said the move was against the spirit of democracy and contravened the state constitution.
"It has been stated clearly that when another person has received the majority support of the Assemblymen, then that person will be appointed as the new mentri besar.
"This was proven in the constitutional crisis in the state of Perak, where a new mentri besar was appointed without dissolving the State Assembly.
"That is his threat merely to retain the post and position. To me, this shows that the position of the mentri besar is more important than the people's right and sovereignty of the law," he said.
Asked on his speculation concerning the outcome of the PAS Central Committee meeting scheduled for tomorrow, Lim said "we wait for tomorrow". – Bernama
