PADANG RENGAS: Police will submit their investigation papers involving the unauthorised transfer and withdrawal of money amounting to RM110,643 from the bank accounts of four passengers aboard the missing flight MH370 to the Attorney-General’s Chambers for further action.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he hoped the suspects will be charged in court and given a deterrent sentence so that those entrusted with the secrecy in financial institutions will not commit such an offence.
It is learnt police, who knew it was an inside job, have already identified the suspect.
Investigations revealed that the suspect had transferred funds online from three passengers’ accounts into the account of a fourth passenger before transferring the funds, along with money belonging to the fourth account holder, to a fifth account from which the money was withdrawn.
It was reported that the accounts were those of two Chinese nationals, Ju Kun and Tian Jun Wei, and two Malaysians, Hue Pui Heng and MH370 steward Tan Size Hian.
Speaking to reporters after opening the Padang Rengas Umno division meeting today, Ahmad Zahid said what happened should not have taken place as it was very unethical for the bank employee to do so.
“We are not only talking about the responsibility of the bank officer entrusted with the task of claiming of insurance, but it is hacking into the victims’ accounts, which is unethical.
“More so, no one should take advantage of the current situation when families are mourning the loss of their loved ones,” he said.
When asked whether the bank accounts of other passengers should be frozen to avoid fraudulent withdrawals, Ahmad Zahid said it can be done as the money in the account will earn interest.
The case of missing money came to light on July 18 when an officer from a foreign bank detected a series of suspicious transactions and transfers from the four accounts.
