GEORGE TOWN: A social activist has claimed he was assaulted by a group of men wearing state voluntary patrol unit (PPS) vests on Sunday night.
Ong Eu Soon, 51, said he was having dinner during the hungry ghost festival event near a market at Bandar Baru Air Itam at 10.45pm when the incident took place.
He alleged the group suddenly appeared and asked for him by name which he acknowledged.
He said the group then attacked him with helmets.
Ong said he sought treatment at a nearby clinic and lodged a police report at the Bandar Baru police station.
"I do not know why I was attacked," he said in a press conference yesterday called by Parti Cinta Malaysia (PCM) vice-president Datuk Huan Cheng Guan.
Northeast district deputy police chief Supt Rahman Ahmad confirmed the incident and said Ong could not identify his attackers believed to number around 10.
He said there were no closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) in the area and investigators are looking for witnesses to help in the investigation.
State Welfare and Caring Society committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said PPS members have also lodged police reports over the matter, but declined to elaborate.
