TOKYO: The Guinness World Record award committee has recognised officially Japanese supercentenarian Sakari Momoi, 111, as the oldest man on the Earth, reports Russia's Itar-Tass news agency.
The Guinness record award certificate was presented Wednesday to Momoi at a Tokyo hospital, where he is being treated.
"I want to live for two more years," Momoi told reporters. He also noted that he was feeling well, although he had to undergo treatment at the hospital recently.
Sakari Momoi became the oldest man in the world after previous supercentenarian, US citizen Alexander Imich died in New York in early June. He was just one day older than the Japanese.
Momoi was born in 1903 in prefecture Fukushima. For all his life he has worked as a school teacher, a school principle in the 1950s.
According to his relatives, the Guinness record holder preserves a clear mind, reads books independently and is watching actively sport broadcasts at his old age.
In particular, Momoi plays baseball and is fond of sumo wrestling.
The oldest woman on the Earth also lives in Japan. She is Misao Okawa, 116, from the city of Osaka. – Bernama
