GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island Municipal Council has assured the public that the structure atop Menara Umno is not tilting as claimed by certain quarters including the media.
In clarifying, the council's public relations department said upon hearing reports in the media claiming that the structure was slanted, building inspectors went to the site and found no evidence of a tilt.
In a statement issued today, it said: ""The picture has given a confusing visual image when in fact the structure is not tilted."
It said the picture in the media showed a tilted structure due to the angle it was taken.
Public fears over the safety of the 21-storey building was heighten after its lightning arrestor crashed to the ground during a freak storm in June 2013.
The unprecedented incident left two dead, an economy rice seller Lim Chin Aik, 44, and 46-year-old Sulaiman Jahir Hussain, from Devakottai, India, with eight injured.
Lim's body was never found and is presumed buried under the rubble.
The Coronor's Court ruled his death was a misadventure.
Sulaiman died after he was hit in the head by debris when the lorry he was in passed the area during the incident.
