SHAH ALAM: PKR president Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said she has what it takes to become the first female mentri besar of Selangor.
She said that although she may not have the experience in governing or leading a state, she has all the criteria and skills to helm the position of a mentri besar.
"I have been leading PKR which is a multi-racial party since 1999," she said in her winding-up speech at the PKR national congress at Stadium Melawati here today.
She told the 1,500 delegates that she fully understands the trials and tribulations of becoming a leader.
"I understand the difficulties in being a leader, be it leading a new party since its formation 15 years ago, or as a leader of the family when (Datuk Seri) Anwar (Ibrahim) was imprisoned for six years," she said.
"In choosing a leader, we have to be clear of the criteria needed let it be in the party, state or country. Of course, qualification, determination and trust would be the main criteria. Sex, age and looks are merely excuses," she said in a hint dismissing those who had said she is not a suitable candidate for MB as she is a woman.
She reminded all the party members and delegates not to forget the foundation of the party's struggle, which was to uphold justice.
Citing the example of DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang and the late Karpal Singh who had lost in the 1999 general election, Wan Azizah said that one must not give up hope but instead should continue the fight regardless of how hard the journey was ahead.
"Because of their perseverance and strong determination, both Lim and Karpal managed to bounce back in the next general election and won it with a bigger majority than their counterparts did in the 1999 general election," she said.
Wan Azizah urged party members to remain strong as one family and not be distracted with issues that will make them forget the core principles of the party.
