METHODIST College Kuala Lumpur (MCKL) enjoys a long and meaningful history of impacting the lives of Malaysia's youth through education. Besides providing opportunities for learning, the educational institution is known to have guided many in their personal growth. It has even offered financial support to enable deserving students realise their dreams.
Lee Chiou Yih, an A-Level student has been studying at MCKL since July 2012. Her father, the breadwinner in the family, was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia which left him permanently disabled. Her family has since been relying on her father's Socso pension to make ends meet. After completing her SPM examination, Chiou Yih wondered how she could finance herself through college. Fortunately, MCKL heard of her plight and came to her aid. The institution granted her a full waiver on her tuition fees and took up her accommodation expenses.
According to Chiou Yih, it wasn't just the scholarship that drew her to MCKL. "I was offered scholarships to pursue my A-level at other institutions as well, but I chose MCKL because I was impressed with the dedication and helpfulness of the staff, and their holistic policies such as community service participation for their students."
Soon to graduate, Chiou Yih is grateful for the excellent network of academic support she has received at MCKL. She credits her academic achievements to her lecturers who went above and beyond to help her transition from SPM to A-Level studies. "They were generous in providing counsel in times of need too. It wasn't always about studies," she says and tells of the many exciting activities and events, and of clubs and societies to join, all which contributed to a full college experience. Still, she says the people were the most important part of her college experience at MCKL.
"There was never a shortage of the kindest, most contemplative and thoughtful people here. The highlights of my days were usually the discussions I had with lecturers and friends, in such a wonderfully accepting and understanding environment. In this era of instant gratification, friends like these are hard to come by and I have never been so motivated to keep in touch with such excellent people."
Chiou Yih looks forward to a bright and promising future. With help from MCKL's University Placement Office, she has gained admission to the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in UK to read Government and Economics. She will be leaving for her undergraduate studies in September being awarded a scholarship under the LSE Undergraduate Support Scheme. Chiou Yih is just one of many other successful MCKL alumni such as Lok Chen-Yue and Ng Wai Lam. Lok and Ng have both acquired Khazanah Global Scholarships to pursue their education at University College London and the University of Oxford respectively.
