KOTA BARU: Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) personnel at the Pisau Raut, Tumpat security post here foiled an attempt by three men to smuggle in firearms into the country through the Malaysia-Thailand border.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mazlan Lazim said a Colt M16 A1 (5.5MM), a 60 V T Model M16 (5.56MM), an M4 (5.56MM) which had all been dismantled, and an intact AK47 were seized in the incident.
However, the suspects managed to escape.
According to Mazlan, the personnel were patrolling the area around 8.30pm when they spotted three men in a boat that was heading towards the riverbank near the border at Sungai Golok.
"Two of the suspects alighted with a sack. Then realising the presence of the personnel, they fled and swam back to the boat leaving the load behind.
"The sack contained weapons, which were rusty and covered with mud but we found that they could still function," he told reporters at the state police contingent headquarters here yesterday.
He urged the public to provide police with any information they have on the case.
Also present at the press conference was 8th Brigade Commander, Brig Gen Datuk Azmy Yahya. – Bernama
