KUALA LUMPUR: In a move to curb corruption in the country, Transparency International-Malaysia (TI-M) today launched its "Unmask the Corrupt" campaign.
The 24-month initiative is part of a global campaign, which was launched simultaneously today in 10 other countries, namely Australia, Brazil, France, Indonesia Portugal, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States.
The initiative is aimed at reducing large-scale thefts of public money or solicitation of bribes as well as money-laundering payments.
The campaign will focus on three main areas – tracing beneficial ownership, barring those with a history of corruption from entering the country, and regulating luxury investment.
According to TI-M president Datuk Akhbar Satar, the campaign is part of a long-term and wider "no impunity for corruption" initiative.
"The campaign is to restrict the ability of the corrupt and their facilitators from transferring and enjoying illicit assets, which are frequently stolen and diverted from public budgets ...," he said when delivering his keynote address at the launching of the campaign here.
He said the solution will require a combination of self-regulation, government-industry collaboration and cooperation among countries for account information.
