PETALING JAYA: Malayalees nationwide celebrated Onam which is their Harvest festival with their family and friends today.
The main highlight was the "Onam Sadya", a big lunch featuring many traditional Malayalee dishes.
The Klang Malayalee Association (Mamangam), served 21 dishes at their Onam Sadya to feed 90 families.
The dishes included the Kaalan, Avial, Thoran, Olan, Puliyinchi, Kootukari and Pachadi.
"It is more like a get together among our community around Klang to jointly celebrate the festival which originated from Kerala, India" said Mamangam founding president Datuk Rajan Menon.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak also brought joy to the 300,000 Malaysian Malayalee community in Malaysia when he posted a "Happy Onam" greeting on his Facebook account.
"In conjunction with the celebration of the harvest and thanksgiving festival of Onam this year, I would like to wish 'Onam Ashamsakal' to the Malayalee community in Malaysia".
The All Malaysian Malayalees Association (Amma) president Datuk Suseela Menon said Najib's greeting made the celebration more wonderful and meaningful.
She recalled meeting the prime minister at a Malayalee gathering four years ago and how he expressed his appreciation for the tight-knight minority community.
Onam is a celebration of the homecoming of the great King Mahabali who was sent by Lord Vishnu into the nether world as a mythos.
