KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) collected RM4.572 million in compound fines for traffic offences committed since January this year.
The fines were from 807,531 compound notices issued.
KL Mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib said since 2007, City Hall has issued 5.4 million compound notices for traffic-related offences to 1.24 million people.
"We are working with the Road Transport Department (RTD) on blacklisting those who refuse to settle their fines despite repeated reminders to do so," he said in a press conference after attending City Hall Enforcement Day.
Also present was Federal Territories Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Loga Bala Mohan Jaganathan.
Between January and July, he said, 2,580 vehicles have been blacklisted by RTD for failure to settle compound notices issued by City Hall.
With the launch of the Traffic Special Discount programme which began in August, City Hall managed to collect RM639,760 in outstanding arrears.
Vehicle owners who have not settled their compounds have until Dec 31 to do so under the programme.
To further boost enforcement, Ahmad Phesal approved the purchase of 80 units of 250cc motorcycles for traffic wardens, 15 scooters for women traffic wardens, 40 bicycles, 10 horses and 30 smart gates to be used as barriers and to close roads.
He said while all these would be purchased before the end of the year, the enforcement officers will also be trained and kept abreast with the laws related to their jobs.
Ahmad Phesal said City Hall was in discussion with the attorney-general on having City Hall magistrate's court handle cases daily as the current sitting frequency of two days a week is not sufficient to deal with the increase in the number of traffic offences.
