KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians cannot afford to keep walking on egg shells especially in a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country, according to Malaysian Bar Council president Christopher Leong (pix).
He said Malaysians must learn to have a sense of humour and not be over sensitive towards jokes or parodies, as this would not bring true harmony and unity among its citizens.
Leong was commenting on the recent arrest under the Sedition Act 1948, of an airline cargo worker for his Facebook parody, "Persatuan Kongsi Gelap Melayu" (Malay Secret Society Association).
"Hopefully we will be able to take everything that is said or done without being so over sensitive that we even object to jokes and parodies," he said at a press conference after the Malaysian Bar's Extroardinary General Meeting (EGM) at Wisma MCA, here yesterday.
During the meeting, Leong said the Malaysian Bar passed several motions, one against the Sedition Act and another, to reject all forms of bigotry, racist and religious extremism.
The other motions were to call the government to commit to and promote the building of a fair, just, harmonious, unified, moderate and progressive Malaysia. – Bernama
