KUALA LUMPUR: The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry will set up a homeless shelter in Kota Kinabalu in January next year that will be able to accommodate 50 people.
Its deputy minister, Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun said the shelter will act as a temporary home for those who come from other states looking for a job but unable to get one and need a place to stay.
These shelters, known as Anjung Singgah YKN (Yayasan Kebajikan Negara), would provide a maximum two-week free accommodation for them, she said after visiting the Anjung YKN Kuala Lumpur in Jalan Hang Lekiu here today.
The shelter in Kota Kinabalu will be the fifth to be set up by the ministry with the other three being in Penang, Kuching and Johor Baru.
Chew, who is also a MCA vice-president, said the ministry had allocated an average of RM60,000 a month as the operating cost for each shelter.
As the amount is high, she hoped non-government organisations (NGOs) could help the ministry by sharing the cost to help maintain the shelters.
Up to last month, Chew said a total of 1,845 people had benefited from the services offered by the four shelters since the first was set up here in April, 2011.
