BUTTERWORTH: The body of a woman was found by police today evening in Kampung Tok Keramat, where charred human remains were found near a river bank earlier in the day.
The break came after police detained a male suspect in Bandar Baru, Kedah, at about 4.45pm.
The man, who has a previous record relating to drugs, led police to the site.
Central Seberang Prai district police chief ACP Rusli Mohd Noor said police believe they have found all the victim's remains, with the discovery of the body.
He said the relationship between the victim and the suspect is still under investigation as well as the motive.
"He will be taken to the Bukit Mertajam court to be remanded," he told reporters at the scene, adding that the case is being investigated for murder.
Earlier in the day, a joint police and hospital team had recovered several charred bones in the area.
Penang Hospital Forensic Department head Datuk Dr Zahari Noor had then confirmed the remains were of human origin.
The search was initiated after a man's search for his female friend led to the discovery of some charred bones.
The man, who declined to be named, said he and a few others had started searching for their friend, who is in her late 20s, when they could not locate her on Monday.
He said their efforts to locate the woman was intensified when they discovered bloodstains at the house where her boyfriend stayed.
"I suspected something amiss after seeing the blood stains and went out looking for her," he said.
