Crackdown on Uber private cabs

    PETALING JAYA: Road Transport Department (RTD) enforcement team has started nationwide crackdown on private vehicles which offer transport services similar to taxis through the Uber mobile app today.
    RTD spokesman told theSun that today that their enforcement team went undercover today to conduct the operation mainly in the Klang Valley.
    He said the crackdown will shift nationwide gradually.
    He said that the ongoing crackdown is a joint effort together with the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) and police to ensure the safety of the public.
    SPAD chief executive officer Mohd Nur Ismal Mohamed Kamal in a written reply to theSun said the commission will also be taking direct action against those found guilty of violating the Land Public Transportation Act 2010.
    "Under Section 16 of the act, those found guilty of breaching the law could be fined between RM10,000 or imprisoned for up to a year for the usage of unlicensed vehicles and drivers, which are provided by third party supplier to Uber," he added.
