Nepalese woman charged with causing death of foetus

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A Nepalese woman was charged in the Sessions Court today for causing the death of her foetus in a clinic.
Thapa Nirmala, 24, is alleged to have committed the offence at Poliklinik Ng in Jalan Ciku, Taman Ciku here, at around 3pm on Oct 9.
She was charged for an act done with the intent to prevent a child from being born alive or to cause it to die after birth.
The offence, under the Penal Code, provides for a maximum jail sentence of 10 years or fine or both upon conviction.
No plea was recorded from the factory worker and she looked confused when the charge was read to her.
Sessions Court Judge Musyiri Peet fixed Nov 12 for an interpreter to be present.
Thapa was not represented by counsel while Deputy Public Prosecutor Lim Saw Sim appeared for the prosecution.
