Penang still offers low cost housing

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Housing Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo has refuted claims the state no longer offers low cost housing units priced at RM42,000.
He said 12 affordable housing projects by the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) will have 850 low cost units to cater to the lower income group.
He said the private sector has built 12,417 low cost units from 2008 until May 2014 in 64 projects throughout the state.
"This is in pursuant to the policy requiring them to provide 30% low or low medium cost units in their projects," he said in a press conference today.
Jagdeep and state Federal Action Council chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman have been trading barbs over housing matters in Penang.
Zainal had chided the state government for holding up approval for more than 9,000 housing units under federal housing projects.
On a meeting with Zainal, Jagdeep said they will have a face-to-face meet up on Nov 3 to discuss and resolve housing issues.
He said the move was a positive one and hope the meeting will be fruitful.
