PUTRAJAYA: The Social Welfare Department has announced the return of the Hang Tuah Medal Award in conjunction with the coming Children's Day, which falls on Nov 1 this year.
The award is accorded to children below the age of 18 for acts of bravery.
It was last presented in 2008.
In a press conference in Putrajaya today, department director-general Datuk Norani Mohd Hashim said the medal will be awarded on Children's Day in Alor Star where a celebration for senior citizens will also be held.
Norani said this may help close the generational gap between youths and senior citizens and cultivate traditional values such as respect towards the elderly.
Also present at the event were two former winners of the Hang Tuah Medal – Firdaus Haris who won in 2006 and Muhammad Zulfahmi Zuraidi who was awarded the medal in 2007.
